Dancing on the Gold Coast

Frequently Asked Questions

What do I wear for dance classes at NYB?
Anything that you are comfortable to move in. Some ladies like to wear dresses or skirts to dance while others prefer pants. As long as you feel comfortable that's what matters. Shoes are something that should be considered. Since you will be doing turning and spinning shoes with rubber soles are not a good idea, try to avoid sneakers. For the guys a leather soled shoe is a good place to start and for the ladies a low-heeled shoe with a supported back is a good idea, nothing like a thong or sling-back which will slip around.

Do I need a partner for dance lessons?
Absolutely not. Many people dance as singles and we try to even out the numbers in our classes between couples and singles and fill in gaps as best we can with helpers and teachers. Even if you attend without a partner, you will not feel left out or be dancing alone.

Do I need to book in advance for dance classes?
For our Medal/Technique, Salsa & Tango courses we do require booking in advance so please just send an email or give us a call to book these ones. Our social classes for Ballroom/Latin do not require booking.

Do I need any dance experience?
Absolutely not. For our social beginner classes, no dance experience of any kind is needed. To enter our medal courses, we do like our students to have completed at least to beginners as we spend a great deal of time on technique and not so much time on steps in these courses. The aim of our beginner groups is to teach you all the basics to the most popular Ballroom & Latin dances and get you out and about dancing in the social dance scene.

I am coming to NYB from another dance studio/dance program - where do I fit in?
If you have previous dance experience all you need to do is contact us and we can easily advise which classes will suit you. Every dance studio has different classes and levels and we can quickly determine which classes at NYB will suit you. Look forward to hearing from you soon.

When and where can I practice what I have learned?
